In English we use THERE IS or THERE ARE to talk about things we can see and things that exist.

We use THERE IS for singular and uncountable nouns and we use THERE ARE for plural or countable nouns.

My Ideal Room

           
               

My ideal room is not very big but it is comfortable. The walls are light orange with a modern picture. The bed is really nice. There are some soft cushions on it. There is a bright blue sofa opposite to the bed where I have got my toys. There is a big window with a beautiful curtain, so I have got good natural light in my room. There are two lamps: a white lamp on the wall and a blue ceiling lamp. The bookshelves are on the wall and they have got a lot of books. Under the window there is a desk with the Eiffel tower. I love Paris! Next to the desk I have got my chair. My football medals are on the wall. There is a big colourful rug on the floor. Finally, there is an enourmous wardrobe only for me! What a fantastic room! 

This is my ideal room! Now it's your turn! Prepare a project to hand in in a plastic file. Your work must include:

• an image/collage/photo of your ideal room;
• a description including: there is/are; verb to be; have/has got; adjectives; and; but; colours.

In the evaluation of the project I wil take into account:

• presentation of the project (tideness, creativity, illustrations, etc.)
• text production (content clearly expressed, verbs correctly used, order of adjectives, words compulsory to include, etc.)

A - AN

When do we use A or An?

A or An are INDEFINITE ARTICLES. But how do we know when to say A and when to say AN?

The rule is really very simple. It depends on the sound at the start of the following word. (It does not depend on the way we write the following word, it depends on the way we say it.) 

A + consonant sound

 

If the following word starts with a consonant sound, then we say A. 

a cat

a game of golf

a human emotion

a Peruvian

a very fat woman

 

AN + vowel sound

 

If the following word starts with a vowel sound, then we say AN. 

an apple

an extremely easy job

an interesting film

an old man

an umbrella

 

The importance of sound

 

Normally, we pronounce consonant letters with a consonant sound, and vowel letters with a vowel sound. But there are some exceptions. The rule about A or AN is still the same. You just need to think about the sound, not the writing. Look at these examples: 

consonant letter with vowel sound
an honest man	on-est
an hour	our
an FBI agent	eff-bee-ai

vowel letter with consonant sound
a European country	you-ro-pe-an
a one-day conference	won-day
a university	you-ni-ver-si-ty

 
In an hour.
(Although 'house' and 'hour' start with the same three letters (hou), one attracts 'a' and the other 'an'.)

An unknown man.

It is a honour.
('honour' - starts with an o sound)

Send an US ambassador.
('US' - starts with a y sound)

WHAT IS A PREPOSITION OF PLACE?

Prepositions are words that show a PLACE or POSITION. They indicate where something is located. 

E.g. 

The cat is on the mat.

The cat is in the box.





IN and On are prepositions.
