AN IDIOM THAT YOU "NEED TO KNOW"

Last February the song Need to Know by Lady Antebellum won the record of the year in the Grammy Awards. I think the song is beautiful. I love the whole sound and flow of it! The first time I heard it was in the Grammys and I fell in love with it right away.

The song is about how you try to leave someone but no matter how hard you try and no matter how much they hurt you, you can't get them off of your mind so you are sitting around thinking about that person, trying to find things to cope and take your mind off of the situation, and in this case she results to drinking whiskey and watching the door hoping that they would come back like they always do, but not this time so you try not to pick up the phone and call but you have lost all control due to your thoughts about that person.

I'd heard the song many times before but it never "cross my mind" till yesterday when I paid attention to one idiom in the song that I think it may be useful to English language learners.

• cross someone's mind
If something crosses your mind, you think of it, but often not for very long or very seriously
Ex. It suddenly crossed his mind that maybe Stephanie had been right.

And now... watch at the video and enjoy it!!

Lyrics

Picture perfect memories,
Scattered all around the floor,
Reaching for the phone cause, I can't fight it any more.
And I wonder if I ever cross your mind.
For me it happens all the time.

It's a quarter after one, I'm all alone and I need you now.
Said I wouldn't call but I lost all control and I need you now.
And I don't know how I can do without, I just need you now.

Another shot of whiskey, can't stop looking at the door.
Wishing you'd come sweepin' in the way you did before.
And I wonder if I ever cross your mind.
For me it happens all the time.

It's a quarter after one, I'm a little drunk,
And I need you now.
Said I wouldn't call but I lost all control and I need you now.
And I don't know how I can do without, I just need you now.
Oh oh oh

Guess I'd rather hurt than feel nothing at all.
It's a quarter after one, I'm all alone and I need you now.
And I said I wouldn't call but I'm a little drunk and I need you now.
And I don't know how I can do without, I just need you now.
I just need you now.
Oh baby I need you now.
